Subject: HARLANS FROM MISSOURI-ILLINOIS

Does anyone have any information on HARLANS in MISSOURI or ILLINOIS?  I am researchng SHERMAN G. HARLAN, birth date unknown but believed to be circa 1870's-1880's in MISSOURI.  He married LAURA L. SPIVA of ILLINOIS and they had at least one daughter, IRMA LENORE HARLAN, born in Guthrie OK, 7 Sept 1902. IRMAN HARLAN married HARRY VANN (of South Africa) in CA 15 Aug 1919; he died in 1930 in San Francisco CA.  IRMA HARLAN VANN died in Oakland, CA in 1933 leaving three orphaned children.  I am at a standstill on this line since I could find no birth record on IRMA in OK..and they are hard to come by there, I understand. Any help appreciated.

Ellie CLARK, 25 Dec. 1919, Hempstead Co., AR.  Attached to the marriage license was a note from Eva BEST of Rose Bud, White Co., AR, saying she was Clyde's mother and consented that he marry (he was 18 and considered underage).  Though the license says both Ellie and Clyde were from Hope, AR, not two weeks after they were married Ellie and Clyde appear living next to or with--can't tell, the number is written over, as if corrected--Hollis and Eva BEST in the 1920 White Co., AR, census.  Next to Clyde's name is "bro. in law," meaning he was Eva's little brother, not her son.  (Eva is 35, so it could be either.)  Other White Co. marriage records show that Clyde m2 Maggie ORR, April 1929, and that a Porter HARLAN of Rose Bud, AR, m. Ethel GRIMM, Nov. 1920.  According to the census, Clyde and both his parents were b. AR. (Eva's info matches.)  I'm aware that Valentine HARLAN b. 1790, GA, moved to White Co., AR, in the middle 1800s, but I don't seem to be able to connect Clyde, Eva, or Porter to this Valentine's family.  Since my dad, Odell Clyde HARLIN, was supposed to have lived with his parents a few years before going to live with his grandparents CLARK in Hope, AR, it seems likely that this Clyde HARLAN and Ellie CLARK really were my grandparents. (See previous query re: Clyde s/o Lusk s/o Elza D. HARLIN.)  Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Subject: Re: ORIGIN OF THE NAME HARLAN

Is it necessary, or even possible, to try to explain the original meaning of the name Harlan?   The matter can  at best be of peripheral interest  to those who follow the fortunes of the Harlans in America ...and particularly those who feel that the history of the family properly starts with the arrival of George and Michael Harland in the Colonies in 1687. [The organization founded at Philadelhpia in 1887 was named very specificallly "The Association of the Descendants of George and Michael Harlan in the United States."].  Some preliminary comments on the topic will be posted on the Harlan Family Website, under the heading 'Harlan Name' in the hope they may encourage some family-member with an interest in the broader picture, to research things in a more serious and deliberate manner, sometime in the future.

I am, of course,  an interloper in the Harlan forum ....definitely not a descendant of George or Michael. However, we *may* be descendants of Thomas, elder brother of George and Michael, who remained in Lurgan when they set off to the Colonies. Certainly, our family has deep roots in County Armagh, but legitimizing this connection is beyond proof or disproof, since the parish records, which might have cast further light on this, were destroyed, when the Four Courts building in Dublin was burned during the Irish Civil War. I was born in Belfast in 1923, but have lived for the past fifty years in Canada.

One of their sons was Joshua HARLAN 1763-1830 married to Sarah WOOD, born c 1770.  One of Joshua's and Sarah's ten children, names of which I have, was Joseph HARLAN, born 1797 in Frederick County, MD, died in Troy Ohio in 1857.

I am looking for any data regarding these ancestors. The Harlan Book does not contain these people as far as I can determine.  Sarah's sister Mary WOOD, born 1, 25, 1772 did marry a James Harlan # 814, page 263, however, I don't believe that he was directly related to my Joshua.

Monday was the official opening of the FamilySearch site.  It has been extremely busy and has brought many new cousins to the Harlan Family Home Page.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - "It's a virtual forest of family trees. A Web site put together by the Mormon church lists 400 million names of people who lived as long ago as 1500, many of them with pedigree charts. The site, www.familysearch.org, is a genealogist's dream. It will allow online users to research whether their ancestors include pioneers or immigrants, villains or soldiers, princesses or tailors. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' also plans to add millions more names this year from its records on 2 billion dead people, the largest collection of genealogical data in the world."

I recently learned about the Department of the Army, U.S. Army Military History Institute site  http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html which has photographs of Civil War soldiers.  I did locate another relative and completed a brief online form.  Within a few days I received a small copy of the individual with information on how to order an 8 X 10 or larger photo.  When I searched for Harlans I discovered the following:

JACOB HARLAN #6387(page 571) is my great great grandfather.  He married SARAH K. MUSSELMAN, 27 August 1869, in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa.  They had 8 children and it is the descendants of these children that I would very much like to connect with.

1.  CORA E. HARLAN--1871-bef. 1900.  May or may not have married.....

2.  JENNIE HARLAN--1873-?  Married ? PERKINS, probably in Clarke County, Iowa, abt. 1894 and has a son named Jacob born in Oct. 1896.  We believe that JACOB PERKINS may have been living somewhere in MO in 1963.

3.  WILLIAM HARLAN--1875-?

4.  FLORA LENORE HARLAN--1879-1950 (ggrandma) m. JOHN HOMER COOPER, 5 Nov 1900, 4 children--John Freedom, Willard Dean, Helen Margaret, and Jackson Homer.  Helen is my grandma and Uncle Jack has a daughter.  Willard had no children and John died at 13.

5.  HARRIET ELIZABETH "HATTIE" HARLAN--1882-1963  m. EMERSON MCKNIGHT.  Jacob Perkins was listed in her will as an heir--Aunt Hat and Uncle Mac never had any children.

6/7.  Twins--BESSIE AND JESSIE HARLAN--b. May 1886 (both girls)

8.   Deceased--I haven't located any info about this child yet except that he/she was listed as deceased by 1900 census.

I believe that most of these children stayed in Iowa--in Clarke and Polk Counties mainly. Some may have moved to or lived in Missouri--my grandma was born in Eldorado Springs, MO in 1908.  If any of this sound familiar I would love to hear from you......Jodi Nielson

I have checked the marriage and birth records for Montgomery County and have come up with a lot of Harlan's, but not Joshua and Mary.  If anyone has any information about them, please, please contact me and pass it along.

What a beautiful tribute Myla Stevens has written for our cousin Sarah Marie Vilscek.  I regret that I did not know her, but for those who did I would like to offer this poem by English poet, John Donne, 1572-1631.

    Death Be Not Proud

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for, though art not soe,
For, those, whom though think'st, though dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, not yet canst thou kill mee.
Much plesure, then from thee, much more must flow,
and soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warr, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st though then ?
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, though shalt die.

(Presented, as written, in the English language of that era).

Sincerely,
John Lowell Harlan

It is with great sadness we share with our Harlan cousins the death of Sarah Marie Vilscek.  She exemplified those strong Harlan qualities that have been passed down through generations of memorable Harlan ancestors.  Her powerful love for the Harlan family kept relatives as distant as 4th cousins as close as 1st.  She made the effort to visit and correspond with cousins a thousand miles away, always welcoming them to her home and into her heart.

Our heritage was kept alive through her stories of the Harlan history she shared in wonderful detail.  The scrapbook passed down from her mother was safely stored in a box with treasured newspaper articles, obituaries, announcements and photos.  Sarah was so proud of her family, past and present.

One of the highlights of her life was discovering a copy of Alpheus Harlan's book in Washington, D.C. many years ago.  She had them photocopy the entire work, which she proudly brought home and shared with relatives.

This honored matriarch was a role model and character molder for her descendants, relatives, friends and community in her lilfelong home town of Anderson, Indiana.

Her line of descend was from George #3, Aaron #8, George #37, George #180, Joshua #670, Samuel W. #2243, William A. #5704, Margaret Ann #5704-2.

Subject: Mary Jane HARLAN

Am researching Mary Jane HARLAN, b: unknown, d: 1909, buried Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA.  Her mother was Catherin HOPKINS.  Hoping this will lead me to her husband, Edwin R. STEEL and his line.  Edwin b: 1827, Philadelphia, PA.  Left for CA Gold Rush in 1848 with his three brothers, Charles, James, and Thomas STEEL.  Ended up in San Francisco, CA.  Any and all help will be most appreciated.

Subject: Sympathy

Our sympathy to the family of Wilda Eileen Harlan.  English poet Jon Donne cir. 1621 wrote:

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
No man is an Island
Entire of itself;
Every man is apiece of the continent,
A part of the maine:
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were,
As well as if a manor of thy friends
or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore, never send to know
For Whom The Bell Tolls;
It tolls for thee.
Many people attribute this work to Ernest Miller Hemmingway because he used it as a prologue to his novel, but I think the works of Donne ring true across the centuries with the line......"Any man's death diminishes me, Because I am involved in mankind."
